the people's climate march
"we build the future"
From WAC member and Local 28 Sheet Metal Worker Bobby Andrew:
This is the float that the Workers Art Coalition built in association with Urban Green Council and the guidance from the Peoples Climate Arts team that was in the People's Climate March on Sunday, September 21, 2014. Over 350,000 marchers sent a message to the United Nations during their Climate Summit, expressing our intention to move forward preparing for the climate change that's evident on almost every evening news. Floods, wildfires, superstorms and tornados are compelling us to take action.
All of the exhibits that the Workers Art Coalition builds promotes labor. In this action our message gives confidence that we are prepared to lead in building green technology. The Sheet Metal Workers Local Union 28 is always highlighted, given the cooperation from the Nicholas Maldarelli Training Center and the contributions from the instructors, coordinator, elected officials, and enthusiastic Journeymen.
A profile on our float was in the New York Times on Saturday, September 20th in the Arts section. The art community was knocked out by the skills and tradecraft exhibited in the building of the cityscape, the Brooklyn Bridge and the "We Build the Future" lighted sign.
My wife Holly and I were proud and honored to present the skills inherited from those who came before me in our industry.
Ivan Cruz deserves special recognition, and Frank Nitto who helped out all along.
